Hugh kindly links to me, even if my role in the conversation was only to draw deeply on my cigarette and nod sagely, occasionally interjecting with "Exactly...exactly" at what seemed like the right moments.
I agree that it's less risky (in terms of potential social capital loss) to direct the hotshot to my blog, because there is another opportunity for said hotshot to evaluate me further based on my blog content. The old way would have probably involved a direct contact (phone, email, meeting) which would probably require Hugh to be more certain of my competence before "recommending" me.
And yes, fundamentally, it's still about who you know - blogging allows connectors to facilitate those links more easily.
Oh - and although I do work for the world's largest HR consultancy, I'm more involved in the technological aspects of internal commnunications:
- Social media in all its multi-faceted glory: blogs, wikis, and other collaborative, knowledge related, communicative tools
- Intranet strategy - high level to implementation
- Web site (especially in the HR domain) development and project management
