Mobile phones - implications for social identity

Whilst at BlogWalk, I had an interesting conversation with Lilia about weblog conversations [posts on separate weblogs, comments, trackbacks] happened in a new virtual space that was removed from the more conventional single location spaces.

Via Findory Blogory and then smartmobs, I saw this paper [59KB, PDF] on 'Exploring the implications for social identity of the new sociology of the mobile phone'.

It essentially talks about the how usage of mobile phones forces participants in the call to simultaneously inhabit 2 spaces - the physical space in which they are located, where they may already be playing a role [mother, football coach, weblogger] and the 'phonespace', where they may need to present a different role.

Interesting - although it may not have much relevance to 'weblogspace' which is asynchronous and thus removes the need to maintain multiple roles simultaneously.
