Difference between a community and a network

Many2Many has an interesting post about the differences between communities and networks. It's good to have something to serve as a starting point for discussion, even if you disagree with many of the distinctions.

Communities, IMHO, do not have to be top-down, nor do they have to be moderated. Some successful communities do have these attributes, but many don't. I am assuming that place-centric refers to a virtual focal point, maybe like this weblog, where discussion is concentrated.

There are also some interesting comments, so be sure to scroll down and read.
